In The Week Ahead: This Stock's Breakout Signals More Gains Ahead in 2014

By: John Kosar of Street Authority

All major U.S. stock indices finished in positive territory for the fourth consecutive week, led by the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100, which gained 1.6% and is now up 17.6% for the year. This index has been a major focus of mine since the Aug. 25 Market Outlook. Its move above major overhead resistance at 4,147 this month was an important catalyst for the recent strength in the broader market.

On a sector basis, technology, consumer discretionary and materials led. Utilities, energy and financials trailed the pack and finished the week in negative territory.

Cisco Systems Resuming 2011 Uptrend?

The recent strength and leadership shown by the technology sector resulted in a potential buying opportunity in Cisco Systems (NASDAQ: CSCO). I discussed the topic Wednesday on CNBC, just before the tech bellwether announced its fiscal first-quarter earnings.

CSCO, which is the 10th largest constituent stock comprising 3.3% of the technology sector index, broke out to the upside on Friday from 15 months of sideways action that indicated investor indecision.

CSCO Stock Market Outlook Chart

This breakout indicates that CSCO's larger August 2011 advance has resumed and targets a move to $32, 22% above Friday's close. This will remain valid as long as the upper boundary of the indecision area at $25.90 loosely contains prices on the downside as underlying support. 3 Stocks To Watch After Earnings Today

Hello traders and MarketClub members everywhere! Markets tend to anticipate good and bad news, including earnings reports. Today, I am going to share with you positions you would have using our Trade Triangle technology in three stocks that are reporting their earnings after the close of trading today.

The three stocks that are expected to report earnings after the close are Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO), J.C. Penney Company, Inc. (NYSE:JCP) and NetApp, Inc. (NASDAQ:NTAP). All three stocks meet my criteria, as they trade over 2 million shares a day, which in turn provides plenty of liquidity for investors.

In today's video, I will be looking at these three stocks and showing you exactly how I am positioned in each stock. I will also be analyzing two other markets that have been in the news, gold (FOREX:XAUUSDO) and crude oil (NYMEX:CL.Z14.E). Lastly, I will be taking a look at the major indices to see how long this never-ending bull market can last.

As always, we welcome your feedback and your thoughts on the markets. Be sure to leave your comments below this post and share with us the type of videos you would like to see.

6 Stocks On The Move

Before I get into the six stocks and talk about them let's quickly discuss what's happening right now. The big news, of course, is the Alibaba IPO, here is what I do with IPO's. Unless you're lucky enough to get some of the initial stock the best thing to do is just to watch for a while and see how everything pans out. Just remember that perception is a strong driver of stock trends.

The other big news is the fact that Larry Ellison is stepping down from Oracle. Mr. Allison's exit from Oracle brings about a complete change in Silicon Valley. We no longer have Steve Jobs at Apple, Bill Gates at Microsoft. We're going to see some interesting transitions in all of these companies.

As far as Oracle Corporation (NYSE:ORCL) is concerned. The Trade Triangles are now all red indicating a lower trend and prices for Oracle.

The six stocks I'm going to be talking about in today's video will show that three are trending to the upside, and three are trending to the downside. Some of these stocks are setting up for the perfect weekend trade.

Here are the six stocks that I'm covering today: Continue reading "6 Stocks On The Move"
