Now May Be the Time to Buy Retail ETFs

A Wells Fargo analyst recently said retail has bottomed and now may be time to start buying into the sector. With a weak holiday shopping season, followed by poor retail numbers in January and February retail stocks have hit hard times.

Compound that with the need for clarity on a possible border tax and other political issues hanging in the background, uncertainty in the industry is high. But while high uncertainty leads to lower stock prices, it also brings opportunity for smart investors.

Currently we are seeing specialty retailers outperforming the big box retailers like Macy's, Kohl's, Sear's, and JCPenny's. The downsizing of the big box retailers is also a good thing for the smaller players since it gives shoppers fewer options to choose from. But as a whole, this downsizing is hurting the group's overall performance as share prices of the big names companies have been beaten up. Continue reading "Now May Be the Time to Buy Retail ETFs"

We all know the story of the tortoise and the hare and the conclusion that slow and steady wins the race. But regardless of us knowing the story and how it turns out, we still get caught up in the idea, or dream if you will, that we can get rich quick though the means of chasing long-shot investment opportunities.

We have all seen and heard of new investment opportunities that will make you rich; penny stock ideas that will show 1,000% returns, "the next big Initial Public Offering" that you have to own, or perhaps a friend, family member or colleague tells you about a great idea. We all wonder whether or not we should go ahead and pull the trigger on these "once in a lifetime opportunities" and if we made a huge mistake when we don’t.

Well let's look at some numbers, which will hopefully help make your decisions on whether or your time and money are best served chasing these dreams. Continue reading "Are Long-Shot Investments Worth Your Time Or Money?"

Are 'Value' ETFs Worth The Risk?

By: Richard Robinson of Street Authority

"Where are the customers' yachts?"

It was a question the tour guide didn't expect. He was taking a group of tourists through the financial district in lower Manhattan from the area now known as Battery Park.

Eventually docks appeared around the park. And because of its proximity to Wall Street, it became a favored location for Wall Street bankers and brokers to dock their very expensive yachts.

So it was on this day that the tour guide was extolling the virtues of Wall Street moneymen. He told his audience that the yachts were the rewards for creating enormous wealth for their customers.

To which one lone voice asked, "Where are the customers' yachts?" Continue reading "Are 'Value' ETFs Worth The Risk?"

ETFs to Buy, to Sell, and to Watch in 2017

Now that we have rung in the New Year, now is a good time to take a look at your portfolio and make some adjustments. But, before you start buying and selling, you need to know what to buy, what to sell and what you should have on hold.

So with that in mind, let's take a look at a few Exchange Traded Funds you may want to buy, a few you should sell, and a couple that you should have in your hold or watch list.

What To Buy

In 2016 one of the top-performing ETFs was the Direxion Daily Regional Banks Bull 3X Shares (PACF:DPST). DPST rose more than 114% in 2016 due to its exposure to regional banking stocks, and of course is three times bullish leverage. And while most of the time I would tell you not to follow a trend from one year to the next, 2017 is going to be different. The banking stocks rose in 2016 for a number of reasons, but mainly because the economy grew stronger and interest rates rose.

There are no signs at this point indicating that neither of those trends will cease to continue in 2017, so ride this trend.

Ok, let's slow down and understand why this trend will continue to work. Continue reading "ETFs to Buy, to Sell, and to Watch in 2017"

3 ETFs Investors in Their 40s Should Buy

Ok, so maybe you are late to the ball game, or you have been fiercely investing your whole adult life but still feel like you don’t have enough, but want to protect what you do have. If your age starts with a -4-, you likely know what I am talking about. I recently wrote a piece discussing a few of my favorite Exchange Traded Funds geared for all investors. Now I am working through different age groups and pointing out some of my favorite ETFs that are more focused on each age group based on where investors are in their life cycle, their interests, and their investing temperament and goals.

Over the past few months, I began writing about different ETFs geared towards investors in different age groups. I have a piece for those in their 20's, a piece for those in their 30's, and today we are going to focus on ETF options for those in their 40's. One of the main difference between an investor in their 20's or 30's and someone in their 40's or older is 'time.' When you are young, you have all the time in the world, but as you get older, the time you have becomes more important.

So while a 20-year-old will and should take more risks with their investments, a 40-year-old needs to be slightly more conservative. But let's not forget you still have 20 years or more to save and give time for what you do have grow and then maybe another 30 years after that to live off your investment nest egg. So while you want to put a larger percentage of your money in safer bets, we don’t yet need to start a full-on conservation investment strategy.

With that information in mind, let's take a look at a few ETF's best suited for those in their 40's. Continue reading "3 ETFs Investors in Their 40s Should Buy"
