Gold In 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s time for my traditional yearly post about the dynamics of \u201cmodern\u201d money (fiat) compared to the \u201cold\u201d or \u201cperpetual\u201d money (gold) in the current year.<\/p>\n<p>Fiat money is represented by 7 currencies: US Dollar (USD) and 6 components of the US Dollar Index (DXY) placed by weight: Euro (EUR), Japanese Yen (JPY), British Pound (GBP), Canadian Dollar (CAD), Swedish kKrona (SEK) and the Swiss Franc (CHF). <\/p>\n<p>Before we get down to the results of 2018, let us see how did you see the future back at the end of December 2017.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ino.com\/img\/sites\/ino\/email\/10265.jpg\" width=\"376\" height=\"305\" alt=\"fiat\" class=\"aligncenter size-full\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The most of you bet that the king currency (USD) would beat all the rest in 2018. Your second favorite is the single currency (EUR), which is the top rival of USD.<\/p>\n<p>There could be at least two reasons for this ballot result a year ago. The first one is more obvious and is coming from the country distribution of the INO.com web traffic as more than half of it comes from the United States. The other reason is also logical as the US Dollar was the top loser <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ino.com\/img\/sites\/ino\/email\/9255.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">last year<\/a><\/strong> with -10% and you could bet on it using the knowledge about the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ino.com\/blog\/2018\/07\/pendulum-swing-no-5-back-success\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cPendulum effect\u201d<\/a><\/strong>, which pushes laggards to the top.<\/p>\n<p>Now let\u2019s move on to the results of 2018.<!--more-->   <\/p>\n<h2 style=\"color: #003380; font-size: 20px;\">Year-To-Date Dynamics Of Fiat Majors Versus Gold: Safe Havens Win<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ino.com\/img\/sites\/ino\/email\/10266.jpg\" width=\"753\" height=\"492\" alt=\"fiat\" class=\"aligncenter size-full\" \/><br \/>\n<small><em>Diagram by Aibek Burabayev; source: IDC, CME<\/em><\/small><\/p>\n<p>Your top bet was very close to the win as the US Dollar finished the year in the second place (+4%) giving up the top rank to the Japanese Yen (+5%), which wins the race for the first time in 5 years since we started this traditional contest. Usually, it has been among top losers. The Swiss Franc (+2%) grabbed the third spot. When I was thinking of a slogan for this diagram above \u201cSafe Havens\u201d flashed through my mind when I was working on the image. The trio of winners is well known as the assets where the money flows when investors seek safety. Gold itself is the fourth haven. It looks like this year is finishing in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ino.com\/blog\/2018\/12\/brutal-week-comes-disappointing-end\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">risk-off mode<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Below is the full ranking for Y2018 with the Y2017 results in the brackets.<\/p>\n<ul>\n1. JPY +5% (#5)<br \/>\n2. USD +4% (#6)<br \/>\n3. CHF +2% (#5)<br \/>\n4. EUR -2% (#1)<br \/>\n5. GBP -3% (#3)<br \/>\n6. CAD -4% (#4)<br \/>\n7. SEK -6% (#2)\n<\/ul>\n<p>Which currencies finished in the red? Your second favorite bet the EUR opens the losers\u2019 space with -2% at the fourth spot. The British Pound was hurt by Brexit situation\u2019s uncertainty and lost 3% with the fifth rank. The Canadian Dollar was exposed by the record drop of crude oil price and lost 4% with the sixth rank. <\/p>\n<p>And the top loser is the Swedish Krona with -6%. It is a regular participant of the laggards\u2019 party with even worse results, and in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ino.com\/blog\/2014\/12\/gold-versus-top-currencies-and-the-winner-is\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2014<\/a><\/strong>, when we started the rating, the Swedish Krona was also the top loser but with a -18% severe drop against the gold. The SEK was undermined as Sweden\u2019s economy surprisingly dropped in the third quarter, the first quarterly contraction since 2013; this could be the harbinger of peaked growth. The money laundering scandal that was exposed recently in the Swedish banking sector adds to the weakness. And the last but not the least argument is that the krona is the risk-on currency and its ultimate loser position confirms what we witness these days \u2013 the risk aversion.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to add Bitcoin to the diagram, which represents the digital era, to the party of ever-money (gold) and modern money (fiat) but when I got a score of minus 72%, I skipped it as it would make the chart just unreadable.
