Which stocks or markets are you following?

As we start the new trading week, there are a lot of challenges we are facing with the partial government shutdown still in effect, the looming debt ceiling, and the numerous other problems plaguing the US at the moment.

I cannot imagine that even Congress could be so stupid as to not resolve the debt ceiling. Not to do so would be totally irresponsible and push the US over the proverbial fiscal cliff. Should the unthinkable happen, it would send the world's markets into a tailspin and, chances are, there would be a great deal of discussion about changing the Dollar's currency status.

So, with all that in the background, what stocks or markets are you watching this week?

I will be watching Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), and looking for the line in the sand that I outlined in my last detailed analysis. This week, the line in the sand comes in at $497 and should it be broken on the upside, I will be all in on Apple.

There are any number of other interesting stocks like Facebook (NASDAQ:FB), Pandora (NYSE:P), and Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX), that I will also be watching and tracking.

I would love to get your take on various stocks or other markets, like currencies, commodities and precious metals.

As I have said previously, I want to keep close eye on gold as I feel this market is building a base in which to move higher. At the moment however, there are no building blocks in place yet indicating that the market is turning up.

Let's begin this week by sharing our trading thoughts and ideas with our fellow blog readers. Please feel free to share with us what markets you are following and be sure to ask any questions you have about any of the markets on your radar.

Looking forward to hearing your responses, and we'll do our best to answer everyone's questions.

Have a great trading week,

  1. I don't see how they're going to be able to pay off the debts by the deadline. But, I do hope they manage it- I'd rather not think about the effects crossing the deadline is going to have on the markets. The Dow points keep falling!

  2. OK folks......You're gonna love this. My daughter is an Accountant and works for a local Accounting Firm that employs about 30 folks. Everyone's pay is 100% based on a percentage of commissions received from billing to customers for work completed. My daughter's primary function (about 85%) is to act as an IRS Advocate for all of the firm's clients which means she negotiates and helps the customer navigate through all of the IRS regulations, filings, etc. On day 2 of the Government shut-down, she's out of work because she has no one to meet or talk with at the IRS. No work...no billings....no pay!

  3. Anyone out there in INOLand watching gold today?

One of our short term indicators flashed a signal to cover shorts today. Has anyone else picked up on the "Positive Diversion" on the Williams %R indicator.

  4. I trade the SPX. Short term it is in a down trend and oversold. Resolution of the budget and debt ceiling impassee
could ignite a relief rally that sends it to new highs.

    1. Tom,

When this does get resolved, and it will be resolved at some time in the not too distant future. I would expect that we could well see a relief rally in many of the markets we discuss on our blogs.

Thanks for your view point and comment.

  5. Buying the Dividend Champions, especially now with down market. Buying the stocks that are still meeting technical requirements.

  6. Nasdaq/Amex. Pretty much a newbee and finding my way. Have been doing well with Himax and Inovio Pharm. Got in early enough to make it at least "look" pretty.

    1. John,

Happy to hear that you are doing well. Just be a little bit careful withInovio Pharm, it is a penny stock and they can be maneuvered pretty quickly.

I do not trade penny stocks personally for that reason.

      1. Thanks for the heads up Adam. I may have got in a bit too soon from what I have been reading. And yes, looks like the shorts really mess with INO's potential? John

  7. well of course, it makes good sense to lay off 800,000 employees, send them home to do nothing but fret and worry, then promise them to make good the pay for not working.. cannot you see the wisdom and US treasury savings in this?

Possibly, your problem is you do not drink enough tea to see that, clearly.

    1. People are arguing that back pay will not occur. I highly doubt that. Many years ago, a relative of mine working for the VA was sent home early and didn't work for several days. The next pay check included pay for those off days! I think history repeats itself.

  8. Congress wants the gov't to curtail it's spending, so they cause a situation where there is a partial shutdown of the Gov't, But they also vote to retroactively pay the laid off workers. Does this make sense to anyone?
You voted for these guys, you deserve what you get.

    1. Pure insanity!

Congress, on both sides, is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

      1. GoldMan,
A pretty smart fellow said that once before and he was spot on.

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

    1. Just rewards to all those who voted for all those democrats! The majority who voted for Obama (again) don't really care because they're all still collecting welfare checks, food stamps and free cell phones! Oh, and some have rent subsidies too. They're happy campers!

  10. Good Morning
Have been hedging with VXX the last 10 days. Buying and selling it. Currently holding it. Its up $.70 right now. Own Apple. Bought and sold Pandora. Have three biotech that I wish I had lightened up on. That is partly why have VXX.

Any thoughts on when the government will end the shut down? Will it be before the magic 12th hour on the 17th? VXX only has a green daily currently. That why I have been trading it. Mite consider a tight stop with a small position on about the 16th.? How many of you believe we will default on our debt? I don't, but scary thought. Who will back down?
