Janet Yellen Is Close to Making History in Two Ways

By Elliott Wave International

Janet Yellen just moved closer to her place in history when the Senate Banking Committee approved her nomination to lead the Federal Reserve. The full Senate is expected to confirm. If so, she will be the first chairwoman in the central bank's 100 year history.

But when her term concludes, gender may be secondary to the narrative about her time at the helm. The larger focus could be that Yellen was at the helm of economic disaster.

Here's what Robert Prechter said in the October Elliott Wave Theorist: Continue reading "Janet Yellen Is Close to Making History in Two Ways"

Janet Yellen Nails it

From an earlier post by Biiwii.com guest Doug Noland:

Senator Dean Heller: "A quick question about quantitative easing: Do you see it causing an equity bubble in today’s stock market?"

Yellen: "I mean, stock prices have risen pretty robustly. But I think that if you look at traditional valuation measures, the kind of things that we monitor, akin to price-equity ratios, you would not see stock prices in territory that suggests bubble-like conditions. When we look at a measure of what’s called the equity risk premium, which is the differential between the expected return on stocks and safe assets like bonds, that premium is not – is somewhat elevated historically, which again suggests valuations that are not in bubble territory."

Thank you Ms. Yellen for testifying to my point.  Equities are not in a bubble by "traditional valuation measures", just as I have been saying.  If you are sincerely and actively bearish the market you had better be bearish because you either think monetary policy is about to fail (i.e. its efficacy is going to wane) or that policy makers are going to be forced to cease and desist, most likely by the Treasury bond market. Should Janet Yellen Be The Next Federal Reserve Chief?

The challenges for Janet Yellen if she becomes the next Federal Reserve chair will require both the steely intellect and the personable style that many attribute to her.

Deciding when to slow the Fed's economic stimulus. Forging consensus from a fractious policy committee. Calculating the effects of any economic slowdown from Washington's budget fight. Facing volatile financial markets. Absorbing new members at the Fed.

First, though, Yellen will have to get there: She'll need to overcome Washington's toxic political environment and win confirmation from the Senate.

It's almost enough to make you wonder why she'd want the job, but a better question is....

Should Janet Yellen be the next Federal Reserve chief?

Yellen is widely seen as a "dove" on Fed policy: She stresses the need to use the Fed's tools to boost growth and reduce unemployment in the sluggish aftermath of the Great Recession, rather than worry about igniting future inflation. Summer Is Over and Larry Summers Is Out Of The Running

Larry Summers officially fell on his sword over the weekend by removing his name for consideration to be the next Federal Reserve chairman. I'm sure this came as a relief to the White House (they probably orchestrated the move), who has more than enough on their plate right now with Syria and finding more money to fund the government at the end of September. It also sparked a huge overnight fall in the stock market.

So the question is, are we going to see a female dollar? I hope so, I think it could be a nice change to see what a female could do as chairperson of the Fed. I am of course referring to Janet Yellen, who is number two at the Fed. One thing I think about government and politics is that you can be completely incompetent and if you just stay around long enough, you get pushed up the food chain to the top job. The official name for this phenomenon is the Peter Principal. The Peter Principle is a proposition that states that the members of an organization where promotion is based on achievement, success, and merit will eventually be promoted beyond their level of ability. The principle is commonly phrased, "Employees tend to rise to their level of incompetence." Continue reading "Summer Is Over and Larry Summers Is Out Of The Running"
