Are Rome and Athens rearranging the deck chairs?

Changing the leadership in Europe is sort of like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic, as we steam forward to meet that big financial iceberg.

Talk that Berlusconi is going to resign and that the present Greek Prime Minister Papandreou is going to resign when the new coalition government is formed, is all about delaying the inevitable. Continue reading "Are Rome and Athens Rearranging the Deck Chairs?"

THE GREEK MINDSET ROCKS THE MARKETS

One of my favorite musical pieces, is the music from Zorba the Greek. If you haven't heard the music, or  if you were too young to have seen the movie (1964), starring Anthony Quinn and Alan Bates, you might want to watch it. The movie captures the Greek mindset perfectly, and that mindset is still in place almost 50 years later. Zorba the movie is available on Netflix to those of you who still use that service. TGIF! Groupon goes public, Jon Corzine resigns and the money mystery goes on at MF GLOBAL.

I think many traders will agree this has been one heck of a week, with referendums coming and going.  If that was not enough, we had the G-20 meeting, John Corzine resigning and MF global going down the tubes, amongst a whole slew of other problems.

I think it's interesting to note that the sharp down move we witnessed in the markets on Monday and Tuesday, was followed by two sharp upward days which basically took the market back to a 61.8% Fibonacci retracement level.  We will discuss and illustrate that point in today's video. Europe cuts rates … and what happened to that missing $600 million?

Europe cuts rates by .50 basis points. New guy, new rules. Jean-Claude Trichet is out and Mario Draghi is in. Now, US regulators are wondering what happened to $600 million in customer funds under MF Global's care. I am sure there is more to come on that front.

It's Thursday and how the market closes today is going to be very important in my mind. If we see the S&P 500 close lower, I think that will be a negative vote for the stock market. Additionally, if we see the bank stocks close lower on the day, I believe that's a negative vote for the banks. Continue reading "Why Is Today's Market Close Important?"

Greece (Grease) is on a very slippery slope.

There is no doubt in my mind that Greece is going to default.  I believe they are going to revert back to the drachma, which was the currency before they joined the euro zone.  Having grown up in Europe, you become aware of the different nationalities and their cultures, all of which seem to be at odds with each other.  I'm sure the German mindset cannot understand the Greek mindset and vice versa.
