Precious Metals Sector Downside Target on Friday's Market Rout

Technical analyst Clive Maund assesses the precious metals landscape after Friday's broad market selloff, and offers strategies for precious metals investors.

After what happened on Friday, many Precious Metals sector investors are naturally concerned about the effect of further heavy losses in the broad market on the sector. Let's now review Friday's action, starting with the broad market itself, before moving on to consider the likely impact on the PM sector.

After almost two months of quietly drifting sideways, the ground opened up beneath the broad market on Friday, as we can see on the 6-month chart for the SP 500 index below. It gapped down at the open and plunged by 2.45%, heading ever lower as the day unfolded, there was not even the customary bounce in the last hour of trading. Gold & Silver: Consolidation

Aibek Burabayev - INO.com Contributor - Metals

Old wisdom says that patience is the key to success. We can see in the charts below that both metals are in a time-consuming consolidation mode. Only patient traders could survive in this situation as see-saw moves play on our nerves.

Chart 1. Gold Daily

The gold hit a maximum at the $1375 mark this July and couldn’t advance higher. It dropped to the $1310 level at the end of the same month. Another zigzag to the upside was deemed to be a continuation of the bullish move, but it stopped below the July top at the $1367 mark. The next drop hit the $1302 level below the July’s low. The metal has reversed to the upside again and shaped another lower top at the $1352 level last week. I put an orange declining channel to isolate the consolidation for the comfort of your eyes. Let's Read The Coffee Grounds To Understand Gold

Aibek Burabayev - INO.com Contributor - Metals

Sometimes we find a revelation in different things or places. Extending the range of our focus is quite helpful. From time to time I watch stock charts to find some interesting setups and to let my eyesight get a refreshing break from commodities and forex.

Last night I was browsing through some stock charts and my eyes caught a familiar structure on one of them. It was a chart of the iPath Bloomberg Coffee Subindex Total Return ETN (NYSE:JO). This instrument has a very interesting structure of complex correction on the chart. And today I would like to share with you an educational chart with a sample of a complex correction, which could take place in gold. It is better so see it once than to hear about it many times. Silver Has Hit The Target And Marked A New One!

Aibek Burabayev - INO.com Contributor - Metals

Silver has overshot the target set at the $20 mark in my June post leaving the gold in the dust. The AB/CD concept is simple yet effective as it utilizes perpetual Fibonacci ratios.

Ok, that’s done, but what is next? Let’s look at the charts below. I put the monthly chart first to refresh the global outlook for the soaring metal.

Chart 1. Silver Monthly: The Game Just Started!

The metal has finally shot above the black downtrend, which I was talking about in my March update. It was a vital need for silver to break loose from the multi-year grip to stop the drop. Continue reading "Silver Has Hit The Target And Marked A New One!"

Pendulum Experiment Result: Success! One More?

Aibek Burabayev - INO.com Contributor - Metals

Here we are! The experiment came to its final stage - the summary. Almost eight months ago we put two completely different instruments on the starting line in an exciting competition, which should have proved or refuted the assumption of the ‘pendulum effect’. The Japanese Nikkei index was a top performing instrument in November 2015 with +13% gains while Palladium was the top losing metal with -24% losses.

Chart 1. Voting results November 2015: The Majority Bet On The Success Of The Experiment!

Above is the screenshot of the ballot results for the experiment. Most of you bet on Palladium winning, which means the success of the experiment, and you were absolutely right dear readers!!!
